Thank you for participating in Ride the Rideau! By committing to ride, you are supporting the work of Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) scientists like Dr. John Bell.
Last year, thanks to the efforts of our riders, you helped to build the new Centre for Innovative Cancer Research, where Dr. Bell (who will be riding alongside you with his team, the Cancer Trailblazers) works.
As some of you may have heard, Dr. Bell made the news today with his world-first cancer therapy trial.
The trial involves the drug, JX-594, which is a genetically engineered oncolytic virus designed to target and destroy cancer tissue throughout the human body without harming normal tissue.
“We are very excited because this is the first time in medical history that a viral therapy has been shown to consistently and selectively replicate in cancer tissue after intravenous infusion in humans,” said Dr. Bell.
Although the drug is still in the early stages of testing, Dr. Bell said he believes that someday, viruses and other biological therapies could truly transform the approach for treating cancer.
We hope this shows you how critical your fundraising efforts are – thank you! Together, we can continue to make a difference in cancer research!
